At least 31 people were feared dead in Wanzamai village of Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State as a result of a fatal road accident which occurred along Tsafe/Funtua road.

According to an eyewitness account, the accident occurred on Friday evening when a Volkswagen Golf station wagon collided with a Peugeot J5 bus.

Narrating how the accident took place, the eye-witness revealed that the driver of the Golf wanted to overtake a vehicle and in the process rammed into an oncoming bus from the opposite direction.

He said the heavy sound of the collision was so intense that people had to run towards the scene of the accident.

According to a source, the bus was jampacked with children and women who were trapped and could not get out, leading to many of them suffering burns of varying degrees.

Sunday Tribune also gathered that at least 29 dead bodies mostly children and women were retrieved from the bus, while only two passengers lost their lives in the station wagon. As at the time of filing this report, the corpses of the deceased have been conveyed to the General hospital, Tsafe and the Federal Medical Centre, Gusau.

When contacted, the state police commissioner, Alhaji Tambari Yabo confirmed the accident. However, he claimed 14 people were reported dead.

Meanwhile, the state sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Command, Mr Cheche Kalu has counselled motorists to obey traffic rules, stressing that most of the road accidents occur as a result of non-compliance with traffic rules.
