Five students of the Federal College of Education (FCE), Osiele, Abeokuta, were on Friday evening crushed by a truck.

This development, Saturday Tribune learnt led to an outrage by the students as they trooped  to the Abeokuta- Odeda-Ibadan road where they caused traffic snarl while they also set ablaze four other trucks.

The incident was said to have occurred about 5:30 pm when the truck loaded with granite from a quarry which was few metres away from the institution rammed into a taxi cab conveying the students.

It was gathered that the students whose identities were unknown at the time of filing this report died on the spot.

The entire area was thrown into confusion as the rampaging students made bonfires on the only highway that leads into Abeokuta from Ibadan making movement difficult for motorists and passengers.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the story but stated that the students were only injured, taken to hospital and have been discharged.

The situation was however brought under control as a detachment of police arrived the scene of the incident to disperse the protesters from the scene.

The State Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye, was at the scene of the incident to calm the students down, but all entreaties were shunned by them.

"The protest was hijacked by miscreants; it was not just students’ protest again. The CP tried to address the protesters but they went on the rampage. The police had to dislodge them with teargas.

"Most of the students retreated when the management tried to address them but some hoodlums who hijacked the protest continued, threatening to burn all the trucks at Asero motor park.

"As to the number of victims, there are conflicting reports. The command is yet to be briefed by the DPO (in charge of Obantoko Division) who is busy maintaining law and order in the area,” the PPRO stated.
