The long arm of the law has caught up with an Ibadan, Oyo State-based businesswoman, Bunmi Akintoye, following her arrest and subsequent investigations by the Police Special Fraud Unit, 13 Milverton Road, Ikoyi Lagos, over sundry complaints by different persons

involving several millions of naira against her.

In one of the cases, the 33-year old suspect, was said to have obtained 96 pieces of Hewlett Packard Laptops (HP computers) in June 2011 from one of the complainants at the cost of N105,000 each and at a total sum of N10.8 million.

A press statement signed by the Head, Public Affairs section of the Police Anti- fraud Unit, Mr. Pius Afachung, a copy of which was made available to Saturday Tribune on Friday, alleged that Akintoye criminally confused her unsuspecting victim (names withheld) by issuing post-dated Skye Bank cheques in the value of N8.5 million, which all bounced on presentation at a branch of the bank.

In another development, the release added that the suspect allegedly approached one man in Ibadan, under the pretence that she won a contract from a private university in the city, after which she was said to have obtained a sum of N6 million from the victim.

Afachung, a Superintendent of Police (SP), stated further that in yet another case, Akintoye allegedly obtained the sum of $80,000 from a United States-based Nigerian lady (names withheld) under the guise of carrying out a legitimate transaction.

The release, however, noted that in each of the cases, the suspect would disappear and would no longer pick calls from her victims, adding that the suspect had since confessed to the crimes to the police.

“The suspect, Bunmi Akintoye, is a pathological fraudster, who has engaged in serial fraudulent practices. Members of the public are hereby warned to be at alert as some other persons of the type of Akintoye are out there prowling in search of innocent and unsuspecting members of the public,” the release warned.

It assured that the police investigations into the cases are ongoing and that the suspect will be arraigned in court as soon as investigations into the cases are concluded.
