It was both confusion and drama on Thursday as the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) set up a committee to tackle environmental challenges in Abuja, a year after a similar committee was constituted without any achievement and official disbandment.

The Clean and Green Greater Abuja Initiative Committee was constituted on August 25, 2011 with a 30-day ultimatum to rid the territory of waste with focus on the satellite towns. It was chaired by Mrs. Jummai Kwanashi, who now works as Senior Special Assistant (special duties) to FCT Minister of State, Jumoke Akinjide.

Although the 30-day ultimatum was not met as Abuja remains in filth, the administration never officially disbanded the committee inaugurated with pomp of sort at the popular Eagle Square before setting up similar committee on Friday.

The former chairman, Mrs Kwanashi, as well as some former members were drafted into the new committee.

Akinjide, who inaugurated the new committee blamed the abysmal performance of the previous committee on systemic failure and poor funding, among others.

She was silent on whether the former committee was disbanded and if it judiciously utilized its budget, but listed lack of inter-agency cooperation and political will on the part of the area councils to facilitate successful implementation of the programme as part of the causes.
