Controversies trailing the recent ocean surge that left in its trail the death of no fewer than six people in Lagos State is yet to abate, as the Action Congress of Nigeria, (ACN), and the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), are now at loggerhead over the factor responsible for the surge.

The PDP, in a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Taofik Gani, blamed the incident on the sandfilling of the ocean for the state government’s purported Eko Atlantic Project, where the cost of a plot of land is allegedly put at N350m.

The party submitted that “we are very pained by the wanton loss of lives and property prevalent only along the coastal lines of lagos beaches. We sincerely sympathise with the affected families. We are, however, vindicated because we had continually criticised the unprofessional manner the state government particularly encroaches the ocean and lagoon without due ecological and environmental impact assessment.

The Lagos State government has abandoned the welfare of the residents and embarks on all sorts of misplaced, bourgeoisie projects at the expense of the majority of ordinary Lagosians. One of such projects is the Eko Atlantic Project, where the ocean is being sandfilled to build another ‘Dubai’ in Lagos and currently a plot there is being sold at three hundred and fifty million Naira (#350,000,000.00) with minimum of two plots to be purchased.

Faulting the argument of the PDP, the ACN, in a statement made available by its spokesperson, Joe Igbokwe, warned the party against playing politics with development, describing the party as a bunch of mischief makers.

Describing the submission of the PDP on the project as laughable and awkward, the party statement reads; “we suspect that because PDP is permanently fixed on seeing public funds as free fund for looting; it reads intent to loot into any worthwhile project to lift Nigeria from the morass it has sunk in into.

“For us, the Eko Atlantic City can never be the cause of an age old, universal problem like ocean surge, whose incidence in Lagos has been reduced to the barest minimum by the proactive actions of the ACN government in Lagos. We challenge the Lagos PDP to tell Nigerians if the Atlantic Ocean suddenly started surging with the Eko Atlantic City. Can the Lagos PDP tell Nigerians when last we experienced an ocean surge vis-à-vis the period the Eko Atlantic City came into existence?

“We want them to grow up for once and tell Lagosians the history of ocean surges in Lagos and in other parts of the world, instead of embarking on a fruitless cut-and-paste, attention-seeking mission of provoking mischief for their narrow and selfish interests,” it said.

igbokwe, tell lagosians how much ACN is selling per plot at the place. we dont need attack dog. we want the truth.
