ABOUT 649,156 candidates who wrote the May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) obtained credit in five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

The number represents 38.81 percent of a total of 1,672,224 candidates who wrote the examination.

The Head of National Office of the West African Examination Council (WAEC), Dr Iyi Uwadiae, disclosed this at a news conference to announce the result.

The result indicates a slight improvement on previous results released by the council.

According to Uwadiae, in 2010 May/June, 23.71 percent of candidates passed the examination, while 30.91 percent passed in 2011.

He, however, said that results of 112 candiadtes were being withheld for malpractice and errors.

The WAEC chief stated that the results of some candidates were not released because their schools, about 46 of them, failed to submit their Continuous Assessment.

He explained that some of the withheld results might be released after the Nigeria Examinations Committee concludes its investigation on the affected candidates.
Meanwhile, a  total of 114 blind candidates registered for the examination, while 95 of them wrote it.

Twenty-one of them, representing 22.11 percent, obtained credit in five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
