THE National Association of Kano State Students, Bayero University, Kano chapter, staged a peaceful protest on Friday, threatening to scuttle the peace in the state during the forthcoming Eid Fitr celebrations if the Dr. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso-led government failed to offset the backlog of scholarship allowances due to its members.

In their protest on Friday,  hundreds of students, while chanting anti-government slogan decried what they described as “Kwankwaso-led government’s insensitivity” to their plight over the unpaid allowances of over the last three years, totaling up to several millions of naira.

In a statement addressed to the Kano State Commissioner, Ministry of Higher Education, Farouk Sambo Iya, and signed by its President and Secretary, Jamilu Garba Ibrahim and Zaharadeen Usman respectively,  the government has been given a one-week  ultimatum to settle the allowances or face street protests.

Alhaji Ibrahim in the statement, a copy of which was made available to Saturday Tribune, said,  “BUK students have given the Kano State Government a maximum of one week to settle the students, so as to celebrate their Eid Fitr happily, otherwise students will come out en masse to protest for their right.”

The Director of Communication Strategy to Governor Kwankwaso, Halilu Baba Dantiye, while  dismissing the threat as uncalled for, said the issue has been addressed by the government during its 60th Executive Meeting.
