As a result of vacation of the interim order placed on Imo State governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha, by an Owerri High Court  preventing the governor from sacking once again the local government chairmen in the state, the governor has directed Directors of Administration and General Services (DAGS) of the 27 local governments, to take charge of  the running of local governments till the conduct of the local government elections.

The governor announced this directive barely 24 hours after the high court, presided over by Justice Ngozi Opara vacated the interim order.

The official statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, (SSG) Professor Anthony Anwuka, instructed all the DAGs to take control of their various local governments.

However, in a swift reaction, the secretary, Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Imo State chapter, Mr Enyinnaya Onu-egbu, called on the people of the state to disregard the directive by the state governor to the DAGs.

According to him, the democratically elected local government officials must defend their mandate.

It is recalled that the Appeal Court sitting in Owerri, had recently given judgment re-instating the 27 local government chairmen, who were sacked by Governor Okorocha on assumption of office on June 6, 2011.

This led the chairmen  to  go to court to challenge their dissolution, as they went to the Appeal Court, which on July 5, 2012 ordered their reinstatement.
