Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, has graduated its 20th set of medical students numbering 166 at the Obafemi Awolowo College of Health Sciences, Sagamu, Ogun State.

The Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Dr A.A Ibrahim, while administering the oath on them, on Tuesday at the college’s auditorium, advised that they should live and be guided at all times by the ethics of the medical profession, which ensures the sanctity of human life and avoids bias on the basis of tribe, race, sex, religion or creed.

The Registrar, who was represented by the Provost, Obafemi Awolowo College of Health Sciences, admonished the fresh doctors to be diligent and humane just as they expected to respect the rights of the patients in the course of duty.

Speaking at the ceremony, the state governor, Senator Ibikule Amosun, commended the efforts of the University in ensuring the graduation of the students despite the odds, pledging the support of the government to the College and the entire University as health care delivery remained a core programme of the present administration.

Represented by one of his special aides on education, Dr. Ogungbe, the governor said government had intensified efforts at equipping the various health centres in the state to “provide good working environment” while new ones were being established with a view to improving health service delivery.

The Guest Speaker at the occasion, Professor (Mrs) Olaitan Soyannwo in a paper entitled “Talent is not everything” counseled the young doctors on the virtues of the medical profession with emphasis on respect for human life. She said unequivocally, that carelessness of a doctor in the discharge of his or her duties, resulting in a death of a patient, could be tried in the court of law, saying the era of “Doctors care, God cures” was gone.
