THE Plateau State governor, Jonah Jang, has distanced himself from the position of the Northern Governors’ Forum over the establishment of state police.

Rather, he said he stood by the position of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum which supported the establishment.

The Northern Governors Forum, at its meeting in Abuja last week, frowned on the idea of state police, which the Nigerian Governors’ Forum had earlier supported.

It was learnt that the position of the Northern governors on the matter at a recent meeting constituted a shock to the Southern governors, having collectively agreed to it as being one of the panaceas to insecurity in the country.

Governor Jang made the position of the state known when he received the Catholic Archbishop of Jos, Most Reverend Ignatius Kaigama, who paid him a thank-you visit.

Reverend Kaigama had returned from Italy, where he went to receive the International Golden Doves Peace Award by the Institute for International Research.

Jang declared that  Plateau State was not part of the decision of the Northern Governors’ Forum, saying the Nigerian Governors Forum had earlier taken a collective position.

The governor regretted that so far, nobody had been prosecuted for the crises and violence in the country, a situation which, he said, was responsible for their reccurrence.

The governor advised foreign embassies to be cautious in their briefs concerning the nation and strive to promote good relations.

Bishop Kaigama said the archdiocese was building a centre in Jos to complement the peace initiatives of the state government.
