The verification committee set up by the Zamfara State government to authenticate the actual number of civil servants in the state has identified 7,000 ghost workers.

In its progress report presented to Governor Abdul-Aziz Yari, the committee said it was able to verify workers in ministries, departments and agencies.

Out of the 28,000 civil servants in the state, it said 21,067 were captured in the exercise.

According to the report, if by the end of the final exercise, the remaining workers refused to subject themselves to the exercise, they would be regarded as ghost workers.

According to the committee, the immediate past administration in the state allegedly conducted more than 18 recruitment exercises in four years.

It disclosed that most of those that were given appointments carried forged documents.

It, therefore, charged the government to take action on some of the alleged abuses as well as look into some of the discoveries made by the committee.

For instance, the committee said there were names which appeared on the government’s payroll, but which never existed.

Also, the committee said it discovered that some civil servants reported to their places of primary assignment only twice or thrice a week.

The governor maintained that by the time he receives the final report of the committee, only genuine civil servants would enjoy salaries.

Introduce E-payment for all employees. Have the voucher checked against fraud every month by contracted ICT experts. Give all citizens ID cards that cannot be duplicated. This days of easy e-systems can curb all the wastes in the system.
