FORMER Deputy Senate President, Senator Ibrahim Mantu, has challenged the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to evolve a proactive way and be at the vanguard of the effort to deal with terrorism in Nigeria.

Mantu spoke against the backdrop of last week’s massacre in Jos, Plateau State, his home town, in which a serving Senator, Gyang Dantong and the majority leader of Plateau State House of Assembly, Honourable Gyang Fulani were killed.

He made this remark in Abuja on Thursday night during the conferment of the “Governor of the Year 2012” award on Executive Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko.

Senator Mantu, who was Chairman on the occasion, recognized the contributions of Nigerian students’ movement in the past towards the nation’s independence and democratisation process.

He, therefore, charged the current NANS leadership to galvanize efforts towards the restoration of peace and tranquility to the country.

Mimiko received the NANS award alongside other five Nigerians who distinguished themselves in their contributions to the development of education in Nigeria.

Executive Secretary of Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), Engineer Muttaqha Rabe Darma, received Outstanding Contribution to Educational Development Award; Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Communication Satellite (NigComSat), bagged Leadership Award of Excellence and Patriotism; Provost, Federal College of Education, Okene, Dr. Iyela Ajayi, was awarded the Provost of the Year 2012.

Governor Mimiko, who spoke on behalf of the other awardees, said the awards would serve as a tonic to spur them to do more for the nation.
