Besides, he said others would still be arraigned for their unbecoming attitude during security operations in various parts of the country.

Ihejirika, who spoke during the closing ceremony of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration 2012 in Kaduna, said the army was committed to excellence and “no acts of indiscipline exhibited would go unpunished’’.

He charged the officers and soldiers to be disciplined in the course of their duties, warning that the army will no longer condone untold misbehaviours in the conduct of their internal security duties.

He added that “We have officers and soldiers who were being court-martialled for one offence or the other,” but promised that welfare of officers and soldiers would remain topmost in the planning process of the Army.

He said activities throughout this year’s celebration demonstrated the Nigerian Army willingness to defend the nation.

“The Nigerian Army is determined to meet up to contemporary security challenges, as we will continue to be the pride of the nation,’’ he said.

President Goodluck Jonathan, who declared the ceremony close, noted that what he had seen was reassuring evidence of the army readiness exhibited in both the equipment display and the physical state of the troop.

He said that NADCEL 2012 had shown their level of preparedness in carrying out their assigned roles, especially in the light of the current security challenges facing the nation.

The president, who was represented by the Minister of State for Defence, Erelu Olusola Obada, assured the army of government’s continued support in ensuring that they were empowered to carry out their constitutional responsibility optimally.

The president said he had witnessed a number of interesting and impressive activities at Jaji and Kaduna which served to showcase the commitment to professional excellence.

Seven officers and seven soldiers were honoured on the occassion with the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Award for excellence, gallantry and bravery.
