THE Niger Delta Indigenous Movement for Radical Change (NDIMRC) has hailed the recent change in the management structure of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and lambasted labour leaders on their position on the new appointments made by President Goodluck Jonathan to reposition the oil industry.

President Jonathan had, on June 26, 2012, sacked the NNPC board, including the former Group Managing Director (GMD), Mr. Austin Oniwon, and three group executive directors. The President then appointed Mr. Andrew Yakubu, an engineer, to replace Oniwon.

This development, however, did not go down well with the Trade Union Congress (TUC), the Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers Senior Staff Association (PENGASSAN) and some civil society groups which condemned the frequent changes in the leadership of the NNPC.

According to them, this would not allow for stability in the oil sector.

TUC President-General, Comrade Peter Esele, had described the sack of the NNPC board as “another change in the usual musical chair” at the helm of affairs of the national oil company.

PENGASSAN President, Comrade Babatunde Ogun, on his part, said the incessant changes in the management leadership of the NNPC would affect the ongoing reforms policy in the industry.

But the NDIMRC, in a statement by its President, Nelly Emma; Secretary, John Sailor, and Public Relations Officer, Stanley Mukoro, said President Jonathan did the right thing in sacking the NNPC board, including the former GMD, Mr. Oniwon, noting that the appointment of Mr. Yakubu was the best thing to happen to the corporation at this time.

The group flayed Labour for not seeing reason with the President in doing what he did and called on all and sundry to support the new GMD, Mr. Yakubu and his team.
