THE Plateau State government has expressed its opposition to the demand for the creation of a new state out of the state as currently constituted.

The government, in a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Mr Yiljap Abraham, in Jos, said for the sake of unity, it would not support or endorse the creation of a new state for now.

According to the statement, the government would resist any attempt to weaken the unity of the state and expose the people to greater insecurity and a return to “no-development” platform.

The government also said the request was aimed at discrediting and destabilsing it.

It called on the people to continue to support it and security agencies in order to set the state firmly on the path of unity, peace and prosperity.

“Let it be known that the government of Plateau State is working harder by the day to raise the tempo and scope of the development which touches directly on the lives of the citizens of the state.

“Plateau State faces numerous security challenges now, and will not wish to distract its people with issues that will aggravate them in the demand for new state.

“Government opines that demand for a new state will cause disaffection and disunity among Plateau people and government will not, therefore, support or endorse the creation of a new state for now,” the statement said.
