The National President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr Joseph Daudu (SAN), has announced that the national conference of the association originally billed to hold in Kaduna has been moved to Abuja owing to security concerns.

Daudu also lamented that he was an “internally displaced person” due to the recent bombings in Kaduna and the reprisal attacks which led to the imposition of a 24-hour curfew in the state.

The NBA president, speaking in Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State, on Friday, at the inauguration of the Ikere branch of the NBA, lamented that he could not go home to Kaduna to see his family while they (his family) also could not leave the state to see him because of the violence.

Daudu said in May in Lokoja, Kogi State, the National Executive Committee (NEC) reviewed the situation, “especially in the light of the assurances given by the authorities in Kaduna State and retained Kaduna as the venue of the delegates’ conference.”

He, however, stated that “the senseless bombings” of June 10, followed by “the equally senseless reprisal killings had led to the death of hundreds.

According to him, “the most crucial is that the government is not yet in full control of the situation.”

The NBA president said, “the question to ask is whether in the face of this unpredictable and volatile situation, the Bar should allow thousands of lawyers into such a location.”

He added: “I have consulted widely with all segments of the Bar, and the consensus is that the venue of our delegates’ conference be moved to another location.”

He said the conference will now be held in Abuja on dates that were previously agreed.

Daudu said, “today, Nigerians are refugees or internally displaced persons in their country. I am internally displaced.”
