Tai Solarin’s Wedding Lasted 7 Minutes - Wale Omole
The wedding ceremony of late social critic and educationist, Dr. Tai Solarin with Mrs Sheila Solarin, who turned 88, on Thursday, lasted for just seven minutes in 1951 in Manchester, United King-dom, a close confidant of the family, Dr. Wale Omole, has disclosed.
Omole, who is widely described as one of the philosophical sons of the deceased because of his affinity to the family, was the guest speaker at the 2012 lecture organised to mark her birthday at Ikenne, Remo, Ogun State.
He said another re-markable feature of the wedding was that the bri-de’s sister, Edner, perso-nally used needle and thread to mend Sheila’s wedding gown.
Omole said: “It was witnessed by eight people. Tai wore his old jacket and shoes. Prior to the wedding, the engagement ceremony took place in a shop, where Tai bought a ring that cost 75 pence and put it on Shei-la’s finger! The cere-mony was over.”
Noting that the octo-genarian left all the comfort of life in England to come to Nigeria with the armour of light to educate Nigerians, the medical doctor said she succeeded by supporting her husband to train members of the first generation of Mayflower School, who were profe-ssionals in wide-ranging endeavours within and outside the country today.
