Supreme Court Reinstates Sacked Kwara CJ
THE Supreme Court has reinstated the sacked former Chief Judge of Kwara State, Justice Raliat Habeeb-Elelu, after three years of legal battle between her and the government.
T
he apex court, on Friday, restored the judgment of the Federal High Court, Ilorin, which had ordered the reinstatement of Habeeb-Elelu as the state’s Chief Judge.
It also set aside the decision of the Appeal Court, Ilorin Division, and dismissed all the cross appeal of the respondents.
Meanwhile, as the news of the reinstatement spread, judiciary workers under the aegis of the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) in the state organised a peaceful protest to express their resentment at the former CJ’s reinstatement.
The protesters, who carried placards and were led by the body’s chairperson, Mrs Folake Laaro, called for the reversal of the Supreme Court’s judgment, threatening to commence a one-week warning strike from Monday.
Thy disclosed plans to embark on an indefinite strike after the expiration of the warning strike if the National Judicial Council (NJC) failed to reverse the court’s judgment.
However, counsel for Justice Habeeb-Elelu, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), in a telephone interview, described the judgment as the triumph of law over sentiment and emotion.
