Soldiers cordoned off the Customs area in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital on Friday, following explosions that rocked at Kwanan Yobe area around Customs  Barracks.

The three separate explosions were said to have been carried out by members of the Islamic sect, Boko Haram.

A witness told Saturday Tribune on phone that the sect members had targeted members of the Operation Restore Order in Borno, but failed to hit their targets as their vehicle loaded with Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded, killing the occupants.

He said, men of the JTF immediately cordoned off the area to control the situation.

When contacted, the Borno State Police Commissioner, Mr. Simeon Midenda said he was in Abuja at the time of the incident.

But JTF spokesman, Lt Col. Hassan Mohammed confirmed the incident, saying that at about 4pm, some Boko Haram members, who were driving in a Honda CRV loaded with IEDs lost their lives when the device exploded with them in the car.

He said, “There were four of them in the car, it was a Honda CRV car. They were targeting our men when devices exploded. Two of our men sustained minor injuries.”

He also said three suspected Boko Haram members threatening people and extorting money from them, were arrested.

“The suspects are in our custody, and you can come tomorrow to interview them. We arrested them while they were about collecting money from those they had threatened them to bring money or they would be killed,” he alleged.
