THERE was palpable tension in Sokoto State on Friday as citizens await the judgment of the Court of Appeal, Sokoto Division, on the 2007 governorship election,  which is expected to be delivered on Tuesday.

Governor Magatakada Wamakko is to know fate in an election petition filed against him by opposition Democratic Peoples Party (DPP).

People were seen in groups discussing where the pendulum of the ruling might swing.

Policemen have been drafted to the state to forestall possible breakdown of law and order before, during and after the court ruling.

Armoured Personnel Carriers were seen stationed in strategic locations within the state.

The peace in the state had been temporarily disrupted after members of the Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) allegedly celebrated a victory even before a judgment that was earlier expected to be delivered by the court on the petition on February 24.

The state Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Mohammed Jinjiri, had addressed a press conference where he said some politicians were attacked and injured and that about six cars belonging to some politicians were vandalised.

The judgment in the petition had been deferred after the chairman of the panel of judges, Justice Mohammed Musa Dattijo, told the court that he and a colleague received a petition from the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu, requesting that action be stayed on any proceedings on the matter before the court until the determination of the alleagations against the judges.
