Share

Former Chairman of Transition Committee of Patani Local Government Area of Delta State, Mr Paul Atie,  was  on Thursday night  shot dead by  yet to be identified gunmen.

Saturday Tribune learnt that Atie was killed near a petrol station in Ughelli metropolis in Ughelli South Local Government Area by the hoodlums  who escaped with his Toyota Alvensis  car.

Security sources disclosed that four suspects overtook the late  council boss, blocked his car around a petrol station and ordered him to get into their  vehicle.

It  was gathered that  Atie resisted entering his assailants’ car but pleaded with them to take away his vehicle which was not the mission of the suspects who then shot him at the rib region of his body

Sprawling in his  pool of blood,  sympathisers rushed Atie to a nearby hospital where doctors battled to save his life, but he  eventually gave up the ghost.

A close associate of the deceased who spoke on condition of anonymity  said Atie’s family was contacted at about 7:30 p.m through his mobile phone by some of the sympathisers.

He further disclosed that the  deceased, who hails from Agoloma community in Patani Local Government Area, had in recent times received several threat calls  with hidden identity.

The divisional police officer in charge of  Ughelli ‘A’ Division could not be reached for confirmation  as at the time of filing this report, but a senior officer attached to the division confirmed the incident.

Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Charles Muka, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, told Saturday Tribune he was driving when his mobile phone was called.
