FORMER President Olusegun Obasanjo has waded into the issue of ownership of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, between Oyo and Osun State governments as he held a meeting with the two governors at his Abeokuta residence on Friday.

Speaking to journalists shortly after the meeting, Chief Obasanjo said the already existing committee set up by the two states on the joint ownership should expedite action and bring up a comprehensive report to chart a way forward towards resolving the issue amicably.

He said he decided to call the meeting to mediate on the misunderstandings in the interest of peace and to guard against any form of disharmony between the two states so that the socio-cultural, economic and historical relationship between the two states will not be disrupted by the LAUTECH issue.

Chief Obasanjo said it was just natural for elders in the society to wade into any matter that may lead to misunderstanding among brothers so as to maintain peace.

Chief Obasanjo, who attributed the controversy to breakdown in communication, assured that “court cases on the ownership of the institution will be withdrawn immediately just as propaganda from either side will stop henceforth,” he concluded.

He revealed that the committee set up to look into the disengagement issue would conclude its findings and submit its report by July, adding that the full implementation of the recommendation of the committee will be carried out in December.

While expressing amicable resolution of the LAUTECH ownership, Chief Obasanjo said that the location of the university would  give ample opportunity to Oyo State to solely own it eventually.
