Conflicting signals are trailing the 25 per cent salary cut, announced by President Goodluck Jonathan, two weeks after the announcement. While the pay  cut proposal is yet to be forwarded to the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), for implementation, the Minister of State for Finance, Dr  Yerima Ngama, stated that the process had begun and would be implemented in January.

Saturday Tribune gathered from RMAFC, the commission that  is saddled with determining and fixing the remuneration of all political office holders, that the president was yet to forward the pay cut proposal to the agency.

The commission’s Chairman, Mr. Elias Mbam, it was gathered, could only act on it when the presidency forwarded the proposal to the commission.

However, the government, on its part, claimed that it had  begun the implementation of the 25 per cent reduction in the basic salaries of members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

The Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Yerima Ngama, confirmed the implementation of the directive, while briefing journalists shortly after the monthly Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting in Abuja.

He said, “The process of salary cut has begun and it is taking effect from this January. As a matter of fact, the computation for the reduction of the 25 per cent had already been done by the Accountant-General of the Federation.”

An economy expert, Dr Ibrahim Umar,  who spoke on the issue, however, told Saturday Tribune that the president does not have to forward the pay cut proposal to RMAFC before it could take effect.
