The African Tourism Promotion Initiative (ATPI) suggested  by the Chief Executive of Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation and head of Nigeria delegates to the 2012 edition,Chief Olusegun Runsewe, has been adopted  at a forum held at the just concluded  FITUR Exhibition held in Madrid, Spain from 18th to 22nd January 2012.

The forum was conceived to discuss how African nations could form a strong unit at international markets with a view to Africa taking its pride of place and attracting its market share of the smokeless industry of Hospitality and Tourism, as well as availing itself of the other opportunities associated with it.

It is strongly believed that the importance of the meeting borders on the fact that the 2012 FITUR exhibition provides an avenue and excellent opportunity for African countries attending the exhibition to meet, fashion out modalities of providing necessary logistics for the effective launch of the African Tourism Promotion Initiative (ATPI) considering its accruable benefits and its expediency to the development; marketing and promotion of hospitality and tourism industry of African nations, since united efforts produce better results than individual efforts.   

  At the end of the interactive session, the following resolutions were reached and endorsed by all the delegates in attendance for and on behalf of their respective countries:
i.  All delegates at the forum representing thirteen (13) African countries unanimously agreed that a forum such as the African Tourism Promotion Initiative is not only important and necessary but long overdue in view of enormous gains and benefits it portends for individual nations of Africa and the continent as a whole;
ii.  Members agreed on the diverse potentials of African tourism and plethora of opportunities that exist on the continent.   It was concluded that there was a need for African nations to strategize; network and integrate all regions of Africa with a view to providing a formidable bloc with the potential for capturing a sizeable portion of global tourism receipt;
  iii.   It was agreed that the platform to be created through the African Tourism Promotion Initiative (ATPI) would be explored by the individual nations of Africa to market and announce tourism calendar of events, programme of activities and other scheduled tourism related projects;
iv.    After due deliberations, the forum unanimously agreed that while the year 2012 FITUR exhibition provided an opportunity for African countries to meet once again, a conducive meeting would be convened at Abuja, Nigeria, at a date to be agreed on, and communicated to all members in due course;  
v.    For the purposes of effective administration, coordination and communication, the forum stressed the importance of employing a formidable use of the Information and Communications Technology to achieve articulated aims, philosophy and objective of the initiative; and,
vi.    All attending delegates applauded and commended the initiative; commitment; and contributions of the President of the forum Otunba Olusegun Runsewe the leader of the Nigerian delegates to the 2012 FITUR towards championing the laudable course of the African Tourism Promotion Initiative.
