The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has urged tax payers in the country to remit their taxes promptly for the overall development of the nation.

The Director of Communication, Mr Emmanuel Obeta, briefed News Agency of Nigeria that some eligible persons were still evading taxes.

Obeta, who represented the Acting Chairman of the Revenue Service, Alhaji Kabir Mashi, said that taxes were vital to the development of the economy in order to build infrastructure in this era of dwindling oil revenue.

He stressed that the service would continue to render good services to taxpayers through FIRS offices nationwide.

Obeta, however, warned that the service would not hesitate to punish erring company that failed to pay tax, as invaders owing up to N4.8 billion were arrested recently.

According to the director, “the revenue service had embarked on sensitisation programmes to educate citizens on the relevance of paying taxes through various media and workshops”

He said the sensitisation programme had yielded positive results as there had been improvement in tax collection and compliance, he said.
