BAUCHI State governor, Mallam Isa Yuguda, has advocated using sports as the barometer to measure the country's economic development, declaring that the growth of any nation must reflect in its sports performance.

Governor Yuguda stated this when the Senate Committee on Sports and Social Development paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House, Bauchi, noting that Nigeria's continuous decline in sports as reflected by the poor performance of Team Nigeria at the 2012 London Olympic Games was a sign that the country's economic was yet to pick up.

He said that it was when the people fed well that they could think of engaging in sporting activities, adding that a situation whereby the people found it difficult to feed well, they would not think of getting involved in any sporting event.

“It’s sad to note that the barometer of measuring stability and the general welfare of the people is the kind of sporting activities engaged by states.

Sports normally is targeted at primary and secondary schools but now our schools don’t have football, hockey, basketball, tennis playing pitches unlike during our time.
