FORMER Commonwealth gold medallist, Obisia Nwankpa, has urged fumbling former World Boxing Council (WBC) champion, Samuel Peter to step up and revive his dwindling career.

The Nigerian Nightmare turned to a nightmare at the weekend in Germany as he was pummelled to submission by Finland's Robert Helenius in round nine of their scheduled 12-round bout in Hamburg, Germany.

It was the fifth loss of his career after the defeat in the hands of Wladimir Klitschko last September in a rematch.

Obisia while reacting to calls by many Nigerians that Peter should hang his gloves for good noted that, the Akwa Ibom lad could stage a great comeback if he is serious.

"Losing a fight is not a crime.That he lost does not mean he should retire from boxing. He needs to learn from every defeat and improve in subsequent outings.

“People like Sugar Ray Leonard, Larry Holmes, Goerge Foreman, Muhammed Ali all lost. That is not to say somebody should quit his profession. Peter should rather think of how to come out with new ideas, that is what professional boxing is all about," said Obisia, who won the gold at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in New Zealand.

Former Olympian, Jerry Okorodudu had advised Peter to bid farewell to the pound-for-pound trade saying "My advice to him (Peter) is to retire now to avoid further disgrace. He is very rich and has enough money to enjoy himself in retirement.”
