THE contract of Daniel Igali, Nigeria's coach to the ongoing 19th Commonwealth Games in New Delhi has been extended till the 2014 Olympic Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Dr Patrick Ekeji, disclosed this on Tuesday at the Games Village, adding that the outstanding performance of the wrestling team has made the Commission to take the step in the best interest of the nation.

He noted that so far, wrestling has produced three gold, three silver and seven bronze medals for Nigeria at the Games, sayng that such a feat could only be sustained if the coach stays on with the team.

Ekeji added that Igali would be encouraged to produce wrestlers for Nigeria who would rank amongst the world's best.

Igali, a gold medallist at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games competed for Canada, but later came back home to become a consultant to the Wrestling Federation of Nigeria.

Since he took over the wrestling team, he has been able to improve the technical and physical conditions of the wrestlers which has translated into his horde of achievements with the team in recent times.

Speaking with Tribunesports, Igali said that he was proud of the achievements of the team in India.

"I must commend the team for this wonderful feat, we trained well and I believe with more time and encouragement from the NSC, the wrestlers would improve. What is on my mind is the Olympics and the earlier we started our preparations, the better," the former freestyle world champion stated.
