AN expert in the built environment has lauded the efforts of the Federal Government to tackle the various problems and challenges bedevilling the housing sector, which have made millions of Nigerian to still be groaning under the weight of homelessness.

Making this known in a recent interview with Property and Environment was the immediate past President of the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV), Mr Bode Adediji, who also revealed that it was not yet time for those at the helms of affairs to rest on their oars because much still needed to be done to reduce the massive housing challenges the country is battling with.   

“The government has shown apparent and commendable seriousness in tackling Nigeria’s housing problem which has over time escalated into housing crises. The government has done this through various responses to the clamour for change and through the prominent activities of the Federal Ministry of Housing and its associate agencies and parastatals,” he disclosed.

Speaking further, he declared that “The government has also extended hands of fellowship to housing sector to the tune of about N25bn which was disbursed some months ago to support property development through the Real Estate Development Associaton of Nigeria (REDAN) mechanism.”

He, however, stated that the government needed to be more proactive in dealing with the challenges confronting the sector by desisting from making pronouncements and policies that will be thrown aside and forgotten with time.
