Senators from the South-East alleged, on Wednesday, that the zone is marginalised in the Supreme Court.

The senators, who made the declaration while commenting on the  state of representation of the  South-East Zone at the apex court during the  confirmation of two new justices of the court, said that the zone had the least number of candidates at the apex court.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Information, Senator Ayogu Eze, who was the first to raise the issue of imbalance, said that the National Assembly needed to immediately create an additional state in the region to correct the imbalance.

He said:  “There is need to create additional state in the South-East. South-East has only five states and that is why we are being marginalised in many ways.”

The Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who also commented on the marginalisation said it was regrettable that the zone had only two representatives at the apex court.

He stated that, “I am worried by the distribution of justices of the Supreme Court. South-East has only two justices at the apex court. This is the highest court in the land and should reflect the geo-political zone. I suggest that NJC should make it equal number for each zone to ensure fairness and equity.”
