THE Federal Government will liaise with the Cameroonian government to ensure that the volume of water from their dam is reduced, to minimise the impact on Nigerian soil.

Senate President, Senator David Mark, said this on Wednesday after visiting the flood sites and the displaced persons camps in Makurdi, Benue State capital.

Mark also promised to ensure that the Federal Government liaised with the Benue State government, so that the displaced people could be properly rehabilitated.

He described the flood as “unprecedented,” while he thanked the people for their brotherliness.

At the LGEA Primary School, Wadatta camp, Mark urged the flood victims to submit to appropriate authorities for the camps to remain clean.

The Senate President, who was accompanied by the state governor, Mr Gabriel Suswam; Interior Minister, Abba Moro and Senator Banarbas Gemade, donated N4 million to the victims.

In his response, Governor Suswam described the flood as unfortunate and commended the Senate president and his entourage for the visit.

Meanwhile, the state government has established two more camps to accommodate the increasing number of displaced persons in the state.

Irresponsibility

This disaster is a nation-wide problem. Hundreds of thousand people are being displaced in Edo, Delta, Bayelsa and Cross River states. I have not heard any statement from the government concerning these states. Everyone seems to only focus on the northern states as if they're the only ones who are affected. Secondly, for Cameroon to act in this manner is tantamount to an act of war. I expect stronger statements from the Government of Nigeria not this stupid "liaise", "liaise" that they keep saying.
