The feud between local government workers and the Ekiti State government took a new twist on Thursday, as Governor Kayode Fayemi announced that he had rejected an apology the workers sent to him.

A statement from the office of the governor quoted Governor Fayemi to have said during a television interview in Lagos, on Thursday, that the state chapter of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) had written a letter to him, that the allegation of illegal deduction of council funds levelled against him, was not true.

It said: “Fayemi revealed that the state chapter of the NULGE had written a letter to him that the allegation of illegal deduction of council funds levelled against him was not true.”

It added that, “the governor, however, maintained that he would not accept a private apology from the union, insisting the he wants a public apology from the leadership of the local government workers.”

Governor Fayemi was also said to have denied allegation that he had been tampering with local government funds.

But the leadership of NULGE in the state denied apologising to Governor Fayemi over the allegation, contending that there was no offence in the first place.

Speaking with newsmen in Ado Ekiti, on Thursday, in reaction to the statement credited to the governor, that they had written to him to apologise. Secretary of NULGE in the state, Mr Victor Adebayo, said “the union never offended the governor to warrant tendering of apology.”

According to Adebayo, the clarification the union wanted to make was that they never accused the governor of deducting of council funds, contending that the publication that stirred the hornet’s nest was not even their true position.

He claimed that the statement in which it was alleged that the Governor was allegedly deducting money from the council allocations did not emanate from them.

He said: “At any time, we hold the governor in high esteem and nobody among us will be happy to have insulted the governor or call him a thief. We never said the governor was perpetrating illegal deduction. So we never offended the governor to warrant us to tender apology to him.”

So Tribune, so ri aye re lode? Where did you get your information few weeks ago that NULGE accused Fayemi of illegally deducting from Council allocations? You and your useless party just want to plung the entire southwest into avoidable crisis with your baseless allgation against southwest governors and their party. I bet you, you will continue to be disgraced like this. Thank God NULGE has denied accusing the governor of deducting from the allocation. Bi iro ba lo ni ogun odun, ojo kan ni otito you ba.This amala journalism you guys are practising can not help you but will faciliate Tribune to become moribund sooner than later

With the departure of of the present MD and and his predecessor coming in as a consultant I personally hope that genuine journalism will come to being once again in my popular newspaper. the TRIBUNE
