FG begins cleansing of civil service

THE Federal Government has identified gaps in the Nigerian Civil Service and has commenced efforts to reposition it for more effective service delivery.
Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Alhaji Isa Bello Sali, disclosed this in Abuja on Thursday while inaugurating two committees — Change Management Committee and Change Implementation Team — on the institutional strengthening of the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation.
He said, “we identified some gaps in our service delivery capacity and we decided to make amends and put in place necessary mechanism to address those challenges.”
He further noted that the major problem with the civil service in Nigeria was that of attitudinal change, stressing that this had been his focus since he assumed office in September 2011.
“What we are doing is not a thing of committee per se but an internal house-cleaning exercise. We did not take anybody from outside to form the committee. It’s an internal house-cleaning exercise aimed at repositioning the civil service,” he explained.
The Head of Service also said that discipline had been introduced in the service as part of the reform process, adding that many of the civil servants found wanting had been shown the way out in line with Civil Service Rules.
He said sanction was a common thing in the civil service “but we don’t publicise it when we sack people.
