RESIDENTS of flood prone areas along the plains of Rivers Niger and Benue are adamant to the relocation warning by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

The agency had warned residents of Kogi, Niger, Kwara and Benue states, who live along the plains of Rivers Niger and Benue to vacate the place immediately, in view of the warning by the authorities of Jebba Hydroelectric Dam, that it would release excess water.

Officials of NEMA were surprised to see the residents ignoring the warning when they visited the areas on Wednesday.

The head of the NEMA team, Dr Charles Agbo, who is the director of Planning Research and Forecasting, advised the communities to move to higher plains.

Meanwhile, over 25,000 persons in 14 communities were displaced in Benue State, following the overflow of river Benue.

Meanwhile, the water level has continued to rise at the River Benue, as the flood continued to ravage Benue communities.

Consequently, the state government has made available two primary schools within Makurdi as camps for displaced victims.

As of Thursday, new communities, including the Angwan Jukun area of Wurukum and the Water Works section of the Univeristy of Agriculture, were surbmerged.

Nigerian Tribune confirmed from residents of the area that water had washed away all their belongings.

At the time the Nigerian Tribune visited the LGEA Primary School, Wurukum, one of the designated camps for displaced persons, some of the victims lamented the nonchallant attitude of the state government and called for help.

Meanwhile, the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) has berated Governor Gabriel Suswam for his incessant trips within and outside the country, describing it as height of insensitivity to the plight of the people.

Speaking through its chairman, Mr Baba Agan, CNPP wondered why the state government had continued to handle the flood matter with kid’s gloves.
