Niger State governor, Dr Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, on Sunday, condoled with the family of Mallam Muhammad Kudu, who lost two of his children, Bashiru and Mustap, who were drowned on Saturday, in Minna, following a heavy downpour that lasted about three hours.

Governor Aliyu, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Danladi Ndayebo, also sympathised with others who incurred losses occasioned by rise in water level around riverine communities in the state.

He expressed regrets at the disaster and prayed that such would not be witnessed again, just as he urged the people of the state to heed various flood warnings issued by the Federal Ministry of Environment, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) predicting heavy rains, which might cause flooding in the state.

Specifically, Aliyu referred to the alert issued by the authorities of the Jebba Hydro Power Station, warning waterside communities, including illegal settlers of the commencement of seasonal water release for equipment maintenance and enhancement of power generation which began last week.

The statement, therefore, appealed to the people of the state, especially those in flood-prone areas to take necessary precautionary measures to avoid flood disasters, adding that similar warnings in the past had saved life and property.
