A Chinese and Managing Director of Chung Full Nigeria Ltd, Mr Ksui Kim and four Nigerian staff of the company have been arrested by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for gross abuse and non- observance of manufacturing practice in production and sale of their products, Osaki range of table water.

This was contained in a press release signed by Anslem Okonkwor of NAFDAC’s Public Relations and Protocol Unit, on Wednesday.

The agency’s official, who stormed the company’s premises on Adesoye Street in the Mende Area of Lagos State accompanied by the security operatives and journalists, were refused entry to carry out their lawful duties by the staff of the company on the orders of Mr Kim.

But determined to perform their regulatory assignments that brought them to the company, the NAFDAC officers forcibly gained entry into the compound but not without resistance and a near mob attack save for the presence of the security men.

According to findings, the company had become notorious for using intimidation and harassment to obstruct the agency each time they had visited them to carry out their duties.

Briefing newsmen later, the Director of Enforcement of NAFDAC, Mr Garba Macdonald, explained that apart from the arrest, the company had been sealed and its operations put on hold.

He revealed that the action became necessary because they were producing in a residential apartment, unhygienic environment and without a valid registration certificate which were clear violations of NAFDAC’s regulations.

Macdonald added that the staff of the company were unruly, violent and almost obstructed them from performing the regulatory assignment in the premises, arguing that their mission was to ascertain the level of compliance of the facilitates in the factory in line with good manufacturing practices and investigation of various consumers’ complaints against the company and its products.

He expressed disappointment that even when the company had full complement of staff, raw materials and production equipment and facilities, the quality of the products could not be guaranteed and wondered why such large scale of production would be going on there without due consideration of health implications to consumers of their products and adherence to NAFDAC guidelines in producing them.

Meanwhile, the finished products found in the company during the operation had been evacuated from the premises for further investigations.
