Bankole in Ikenne, declares support for Yoruba Unity Forum

THE immediate past speaker of the House of Repre-sentatives, Honourable Dimeji Bankole, on Tuesday, held a closed door meeting with the matriarch of Awolowo dynasty and Yeye Oodua, Chief (Dr) Mrs HID Awolowo.

One of Chief Awo-lowo’s daughters, Ambas-sador (Dr) Mrs Tokunbo Awolowo Dosumu, who was coming from the 50th wedding anniversary thanksgiving of Sir (Chief) Simeon Oguntimehin in Ibadan, was also present at the meeting.

The former speaker, who was accompanied by some of his aides, arrived at Ikenne Remo, home of the Awolowos, at about 1.30 p.m in an unmarked Mercedes Benz Jeep for what he tagged a private visit to Chief (Mrs) Awolowo.

Shortly on arrival, Bankole asked newsmen around to excuse them, saying that “you know I have not spoken a word to the press since I left office. I’d like to maintain that.”

Although details of the meeting were not made known to newsmen, it was gathered that the former speaker apologi-sed to Mama Awolowo for his inability to attend the last meeting of the Yoruba Unity Forum.

While throwing his weight behind the forum, he said he would always support effort by Chief (Mrs) Awolowo and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade to bring the Yoruba together.
