NUC tasks varsities on entrepreneurship programmes

THE Executive Secetary of National Universities Commission(NUC), Professor Julius Okojie, has tasked Nigerian Universities on the need to revive and strengthen entrepreneurship programmes at various institutions.
Professor Okojie said this became imperative as the nation continued to face the challenges of growing graduate unemployment and dearth skilled manpower to fit into the nation’s industries.
He spoke at the national training of trainers workshop on the Teaching of General Entrepreneurship Courses in Nigerian Universities, organised by NUC, in collaboration with Centre for African Entrepreneurship Research and Training (CAERT), Bayaro University, Kano.
He said, with increasing industrialisation, most countries of the world had started entrepreneurship as a programme in their universities of which Nigeria would not be left out.
The NUC boss, however, identified lack of facilities in schools as some of the challenges bedevilling the proper upgrade of skills amongst the youth.
According to Okojie, “in Nigeria, we talk about engineering students without the industries, people are saying that our graduates are not employable but the question should be, what their potentials are? We need to go back to the old system because the average Nigerians are resilient, each time I hear that our graduates are not employable, I begin to wonder what will be the factor.”
