Governor Martin Elechi of Ebonyi State, has described the activities of the Boko Haram sect as political, urging the Federal Government not to negotiate with the dreaded sect.

Elechi made the declaration in Abakaliki, the state capital on Monday, when Ebonyi State Muslim community paid him the a Sallah homage at the Government House.

According to him, “the call for negotiation between the government and the dreaded sect was uncalled for, as there was no basis for negotiation,” he reiterated.

He stated that the sect was political, and debunked insinuations that the activities of the sect was borne out of hunger or unemployment, querying “why should you even negotiate? I don’t believe in that negotiation,” he submitted.

The state chief executive hinted that the activities of the sect was a far contrast from the Niger Delta militants, stressing that before independence, the Niger Delta area was observed to have been badly neglected, with the verdict given by the commission of inquiry set up by the British government in 1957, which published its report a year later.

Earlier in his remarks, the chairman of the Ebonyi State Council for Islamic affairs, Alhaji Suleman Ogah, reaffirmed that Islam was a religion of peace, and does not preach violence or disunity.

The cleric condemned the terror inflicted by Boko Haram sect, and enjoined all Nigerians to wage war against terrorism, stating that, the activities of the sect do not represent the interest of Islam.

Ogar used the opportunity to sympathise with all the families that have lost their loved ones as a result of terrorist attacks orchestrated by the Boko Haram sect.
