Following the recent oil spill reported in Esit Eket, Akwa Ibom State, hundreds of residents of the council area, at the weekend, staged a protest at the Qua Iboe Oil field operated by Mobil Producing Nigeria, an ExxonMobil subsidiary.

Nigerian Tribune investigations reveal that the protesters, which comprised representatives of fishermen, youths and other groups affected by the oil spill, carried placards and sang solidarity songs to the local government secretariat in Uquo, Esit Eket.

The angry protesters, who were prevented from gaining access into the premises by council security men, were said to have waited at the gate for hours before the attention of the vice-chairman,Mr Enobong Asubo, was drawn to them by officials of the council area.

Spokesman for the protesters, Edoho Paul, who laid the grievances of the group to Asubo, threatened that the youth would seek self help if the council failed to prevail on ExxonMobil officials to take full responsibility for the spills.

Meanwhile, a member of the House of Representatives, Honourable Bassey Dan-Abia, representing Eket/Esit-Eket/Onna/Ibeno Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom State, on Sunday, berated Mobil Producing Nigeria over the recent oil spill at its operations field in Ibeno, Akwa Ibom, saying that the action of the company over its inability to prevent the oil spill from its Idoho Platform in Akwa Ibom State, which had desecrated the environment was condemnable.

The oil spill occurred at Atia community in Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State and has stretched to a lot of fishing communities within the axis.
