IN spite of series of meetings with religious leaders and other stakeholders in Jos, Plateau State, to have a peaceful sallah, some groups of youths, while returning from eid praying ground on Sunday, suddenly went beserk, damaging valuables.

Nigerian Tribune learnt that the miscreants, brandishing dangerous weapons and chanting war song without any provocation, molested other road users and smashed any object on sight, including vehicles that came their ways.

It was learnt that no fewer than 20 cars were damaged within Farin-Gada roundabout, including seven cars belonging to members of The Redemeed Christian Church of God.

A source close to the scene of the incident told the Nigerian Tribune that the irate youth, returning from sallah prayers, not only molested people, but wounded some others.

A resident of the area, who spoke with the Nigerian Tribune on condition of anonymity, alleged that men of the Special Task Force (STF) deployed to the area watched helplessly while the miscreants unleashed terror on innocent people.

“We are suprised that such thing can happen under the watchful eye of men of the STF. While the barbaric act lasted, they were just watching without any attempt to arrest the miscreants. We were suprised that they did not act as expected,” the resident stated.

However, security men deployed in the scene later averted what would have turned out to be crisis in the state capital, as both the security agencies and elders in the area mobilised to appeal to the natives who were poised for a showdown.

Reacting to the development, the state police command, through a statement issued and signed by the Commissioner of Police, Mr Emmanuel Ayeni, condemned the incident.

He urged leaders of both religions and parents to call their followers, children and wards to order.
