Total Nigeria Plc, on Thursday, organised a sensitisation programme not only for articulated vehicle drivers, but also for all who drive, in Ibadan, with experts saying most of the auto crashes involving petroleum tankers were avoidable.

Mr Ekeleni Felix, who represented the general manager of the company on the occasion, said Total Plc recognised the importance of its drivers to its development, hence the need to train them often and sensitise them on safety precautions.

He identified “overspeeding, driving at night, driving for a very long time,” among others, as factors causing auto crashes.

The company said the rate of auto crashes in the country was alarming, leading to loss of life and property, and that most of the crashes are avoidable.

During the event, which is organised annually at all Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) depots nationwide, Total Nigeria Plc said it intended to contribute its quota to efforts to reduce road disasters through the awareness, among other means.

He said Total Training School in Ibadan was established to train articulated vehicle drivers who convey petroleum products around the country.

The Unit Commander, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Apata Unit, Assistant Corps Commander C.Z Matthew, represented by DRC S.B Agunlejika, said to avoid road disasters, road users and tanker drivers should avoid drinking of alcohol while driving, obey traffic rules, be careful while overtaking and be mindful of other road users and the deplorable state of the roads.

Distribution Manager of Total Plc, Mr Chris Okorie, advised drivers to do away with habits which could endanger their lives and those of other road users.

“The essence of what we are doing today is to remind you of what will make you to stay alive while working and afterwards. To this effect, we have established a training school for our drivers. Please, if you must drink, do not drive our vehicles. Total is saying if you must drive its vehicles, please do not drink alcohol,” Mr Okorie said.
