Shun scheduled promotion exams, Ekiti NULGE tells members

THE face-off between the Ekiti State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employee (NULGE) and the state government has taken a new dimension, as NULGE has directed its members in the 16 local government areas in the state to shun the promotion examination scheduled to hold on Monday.
The union, in a statement made available to newsmen in Ado-Ekiti, on Thursday, reiterated an ultimatum it gave the state government last week, warning that at the expiration of the 14 days, it would decide on its next line of action on the demand for the new minimum wage.
The statement, signed by its state secretary, Mr Victor Ade Adebayo, said its members were opposed to the promotion examinations, contending that it did not have confidence in the state government conducting an honest and transparent test for members.
The union lamented the delay in the payment of the N19,300 minimum wage to local government workers, which the state government attributed to the ongoing biometric capture of the workers in the system and also decried the inability to complete the process.
The union also expressed dismay that the state government was only ready to pay a segment of health workers in the local government system the CONHESS and CONMESS, saying “the union takes exception to the claims of Governor Kayode Fayemi that the non-payment of the new minimum wage of N19,300 and CONHESS-CONMESS for council members was due to the non-completion of biometric exercise.”
According to NULGE, its members would not support the state government in its bid to exclude environmental health workers from the payment of the CONHESS-CONMESS, the special allowance for the health workers.
“Based on this, the union has directed all its members in all the 16 local governments of the state to shun promotion examination slated for Monday. We are aware of the terrible fate that befell some council staff who had participated in a similar exercise in recent times,” the statement read.
