OGUN State governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, on Tuesday, said that the state recorded the highest number of road accidents nationally between 2010 and 2011.

He said this at the launch of four new advanced life support ambulances and 10 refurbished ambulances by the state government, at the Arcade Ground, Governor's Office, Abeokuta, the state capital.

Governor Amosun, who was represented by his deputy, Prince Segun Adesegun, said the record represented 37 per cent and 41.5 per cent road accidents nationally in 2010 and 2011 respectively.

He said: “The two busiest highways in Nigeria, Lagos-Ibadan expressway and Sagamu-Ore-Benin expressway traverse our state.

“It is worth knowing that out of the 4,065 deaths and 18,095 injuries recorded in 5,330 road accidents in Nigeria in 2010, 649 deaths, 1,533 injuries and 1,980 accidents occurred in Ogun State.”

He said the state would need about 42 life support ambulances to cover the entire state. He called on well-meaning Nigerians, philanthropists and corporate organisations to support the state government in acquiring them.

It thus became the first state in the country to adopt the United Nations Decade of Action on Road Safety which aimed to reduce by half road accidents and casualties between 2011 and 2020.
