The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has identi-fied 28 auto crash- prone  areas in Oyo, Ondo and Osun states with a view to reducing death on the roads.

The deputy Corps Marshal incharge of Policy, Research and Statisticcs,  Adeyemi Omidiji, while addressing newsmen in in Ibadan, on “Operation Rain-storm” aimed at enlightening road users on safety on the roads, said the identified areas, which were prone to accidents would be addressed.

He disclosed that, the management of the FRSC, led by the Corps Marshal Osita Chidoka, was meeting with the Federal Road Mainten-ance Agency (FERMA) on  ways of rehabilitating the affected roads.

He said that the FRSC would carry out route and traffic calming along the identified black spots, as well as public enlightment aimed at reducing speed limit.

Omidiji added that, this would be done through mobile and traffic patrols, mobile court, prompt response to distress call, adequ-ate press coverage, domesticated enlight-ment in churches and mosques.

While noting that the auto crashes in 2009, 2010 and 2011 remained almost the same in terms of total number of crashes and death, especially in June and July, he said that operation was to set a baseline for a number of crashes.

According to him, the FRSC was working towards ensuring that the Accra and United Nations declaration at reducing road crashes to  between 15 per cent and 20 per cent was attained.

He reiterated the determination of the FRSC to reduce carnages on the roads before the end of the year, saying that, speed limit, condition of the vehicles and rainy season were responsible for most of the accidents on the roads.

As part of the exercise, he said that the corps had introduced free safety checks on vehicles, while only traffic offenders were booked.

Why tell us the FRSC knows these sites? I came on to read and learn about those sites too so that I could take appropriate care were I to be chanced to drive along the routes. Does this really tally with public awareness? No. In order for the knowledge to be effective, it must not be restricted to the men and women of the FRSC alone. The driving public must also be informed. Knowledge hoarded is of no use to anyone and is useless. Tribune, can you please get the information for us? Thank you.

Good story but incomplete without the list of the danger zones.The list is desirable to help drivers and members of the public.I hope the editor will do the necessary correction.

FRSC UN-NAMED 28 ACCIDENT PRONE AREAS IN OYO,OSHUN &ONDO STATES

FRSC's inability to mention the 28 accident prone areas in Oyo, Oshun and Ondo states is causing panic amongst vehicle drivers plying these roads.This is very unhelpful. We expect FRSC to be informing with accuracte details of the accident statitics for commuters' consumption. It is a dis-service to the nation by FRSC for not releasing the accident - prone areas.Secondly, l find it difficult to understand why FRSC continually refer to road accidents as crashes. Is this the same as air - crashes? Vehicular accident is not a crash. Aeroplanes do crash.
