FIVE children have been reported dead due to intake of polluted water from oil spillage in Foutorugbene and Apodubigha communities in Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa state.

The deceased were identified as Arekedomene Pigha (male); Blessing Adiboere (Female); Tabode Owei (male); Debowei Timiebi (female) and Debowei Peretu (male).

The victims were said to have drunk from polluted water, since it was the only source of water to the communities.

According to a statement signed by Preye Warri; Emmanuel Ebis and Emmanuel Jebbi; leaders of the respective communities, the spillage occurred since May 21 in Benisede Shell Oil flow station.

The spillage, according to them, affected the waterways, creeks and canals and crumbled fishing activities in the area.

The community leaders said Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) refused to clean up the area and the water said since the incident.

The pollution, they said, had affected their fishing nets, traps, hooks, as well as canals, creeks and the entire waterways, throwing the community into hunger.
