The virtues of the sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, were again extolled during the prize giving day of Gbagada Senior Grammar School in Lagos on Monday.

The principal of the school, Mrs Adelaja Adedayo, urged the students to emulate the principles of Chief Awolowo, who was the initiator of free education programme in Nigeria.

According to her, “I urge you all to be dedicated and committed to whatever course you believe in, just as Papa Awolowo did for our generation and generations yet unborn.”

The chairperson on the occasion, Dr Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosumu, said attending gatherings like the students’ award day gladdened her heart, because it afforded her the opportunity to give words of wisdom that would become useful for the students throughout their lifetime.

“As you might have read in your history books, Papa Awolowo was not born with silver spoon in his mouth. Through commitment, dedication and determination, he became an international icon,”she said.

She advised the students to attribute their success to the grace of God and hard-work. “Set a goal for yourself, know what you want to become in life, discover your strength and build on it,” she said.

One of the awardees, Mrs Aworinde Mary, who was the Best Class Teacher of the year, urged teachers to get closer to their students in order to get the best out of them.
