A former governor of Osun State and chairman, Board of Trustees, Obafemi Awolowo Institute for Government and Public Policy, Chief Bisi Akande, has eulogised the managerial skills of the sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

Speaking at a public lecture on Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) autonomy, accountability and governance in Nigeria, organised by the institute, in Lagos, on Monday, Akande said through the managerial skills of Chief Awolowo as finance minister during the General Yakubu Gowon-led military regime, the government did not borrow throughout the three years of civil war, based on his advice.

This, according to him, helped the administration financially after the war, to put in place social infrastructure like roads, bridges and also help in the stabilisation of foreign exchange at the time.

Chief Akande advised employers of labour, civil society organisations and all Nigerians to join hands with the institute to proffer solutions to the economic problem of the country.

The guest speaker, Professor Ademola Oyejide, said the CBN monetary autonomy of whatever degree tended to be rendered impotent in the presence of significant fiscal dominance.

He eulogised Chief Awolowo for the various programmes initiated while in government, stressing that many people benefited from them.
