Jega orders Oshiomhole to remove billboards from schools

THE chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, has ordered the Edo State governor and candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the gubernatorial election taking place tomorrow, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, to remove his campaign billboards from schools where election will take place.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had complained about billboards erected in public schools, saying it would contravene the electoral rules, especially on the voting day.

At the stakeholders’ meeting with all the party leaders, on Wednesday, Jega ordered Oshiomhole to remove the billboards with immediate effect.

The INEC boss and the Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Abuba-kar, at the meeting in Benin City, ahead of election, also expressed commitment to ensuring that the election was free, fair and credible.

Jega, however, frowned on reported cases of politicians who had engaged in the purchase of voter cards and urged them to desist from such act, as it was an offence under the E lectoral Act.

All the governorship candidates for the election attended the meeting, with the governorship candidate of the PDP, Major-General Charles Airhiva-bere (retd), calling on the security agents to beam their search-light on militants who, he alleged, were brought in by leader of the Niger Delta Volunteer Force (NDVF), Muhajeed Dokubo-Asari, to undermine the election.

But the police boss reaffirmed the readiness of the officers and men of the police to provide the necessary support to the INEC to ensure safety and security of lives and properties during and after the election.

Group canvasses free, fair, poll

LAPO has canvassed violence-free, credible and fair gubernatorial election as Edo people proceed to the poll tomorrow, to elect their governor.

The General Manager, Mrs Sabina Idowu-Oseho-bo, while speaking with journalists, urged politicians to eschew thuggery, manipulations and all forms of electoral violence and rigging during the election, adding that women in particular were always scared when violence and thuggery marred elections.

She admonished officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to live up to expectations, by avoiding partisanship and provide a level playing field for all the contestants, in order to ensure the wish of the people truly prevailed.

She advised eligible voters to come out en masse on Saturday to exercise their franchise and vote wisely.

Treat fake policemen as saboteurs, Ekiti ACN tells police

THE Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Ekiti State has charged security agencies in the country to arrest and prosecute those allegedly hawking fake ballot papers and parading fake policemen and soldiers in Edo State, preparatory to the governorship election scheduled to hold in the state tomorrow.

The state chairman of the party, Chief Jide Awe, while addressing newsmen at the party’s secretariat in Ado-Ekiti, on Thursday, said the chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, was equal to the task of conducting credible election.

“It is the same Attahiru Jega that we knew. He should live up to expectation. He has done it before and we expect him to do it again,” he said, adding that “he should not allow himself to be contaminated.”

According to the Ekiti ACN chairman, the ACN candidate in the Edo governorship election, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, was in pole position to win, saying his conviction stemmed from the turnout and feelings expressed by the people of the state in during the electioneering.

Awe decried the deployment of soldiers in Edo State for a civil responsibility, saying “making Edo a garrison when it is not in warfare is not in the best interest of the country’s democracy.”

He advised Jega to deal with saboteurs in his commission, who were allegedly working in connivance with desperate politicians to frustrate the conduct of free, fair and credible election in Edo.

ACN sues for peaceful polls tomorrow

AHEAD of tomorrow’s governorship election in Edo State, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has called on all concerned to ensure that the election is peaceful, free, fair and transparent in the interest of the nation’s democracy.

In a statement issued in Lagos, on Thursday, by its national publicity secretary, Alhaji Lai Moham-med, the party urged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-controlled Federal Government not to use the security forces, which it controls, to thwart the will of the people, just to satisfy the yearnings of some anti-democratic forces.

“The good people of Edo should be allowed to exercise their franchise in a conducive environment, devoid of harassment and violence, just as they should be allowed to protect their votes from ballot thieves. Once this is done, the results will be agreeable to all and the country’s democracy would be the best for it,” the statement read.

The party appealed to soldiers who had been deployed for the polls not to mortgage their professional ethics to satisfy the whims of a self-acclaimed fixer, who had nothing but contempt for sanctity of the ballot box.

“We are confident that the soldiers and other security agents will not forget that their allegiance is to the nation, rather than to individuals, no matter how powerful such individuals may be,” the statement added.

It called on members and supporters to turn out en masse to vote and to also defend every vote, adding that “complacency is not an option on Saturday.”

Edo South traditional rulers honour Oshiomhole

TRADITIONAL rulers (enigie) in Edo South senatorial district of Edo State have honoured Governor Adams Oshiom-hole as the “best governor since the creation of Edo State.”

The royal fathers, who gave the governor and his deputy, Dr Pius Odubu, the award, during a visit to his office, on Thursday, said the state had not witnessed such infrastruc-tural development since the days of the two-time governor of the defunct Bendel State, Brigadier-General Samuel Ogbemu-dia.

Led by the vice chairman of the association, Edowonyi Ogiegbai, the Enogie of Siluko, the royal fathers said the gover-nor’s performance in three years had surpassed the expectation of people of the state.

He congratulated the comrade governor for the success of his administration in less than four years and wished him well for the next term.
The traditional rulers said the July 14 election was a formality, going by Oshiomhole’s track performance, adding that “in another 48 hours, we will be celebrating your victory at the polls.”

In his response, Governor Oshiomhole than-ked the Enigie for the award, saying he saw it as an incentive to do more for the people of the state.

Akoko Edo PDP rallies people for Airhiavbere

THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in ward seven, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State, has said re-electing Governor Adams Oshiomhole for a second term will be a continuation of starvation in the state.

The ward publicity secretary, Mr Kayode Alabi, while rounding off the campaign on Thursday, ahead of the governorship election on Saturday, described the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN)- led administration as anti-people, while he assured that the candidate of the PDP, Major-General Charles Airhiavbere (retd), would restore the glory of the state.

He also promised those who where employed by the current administration as casual workers that the PDP-led administration would make the appointment permanent.

“Oshiomhole is a casual worker in the Government House, so he employed you as casual workers too, so that after his four years term, you will no longer have jobs.

“They are jokers; the PDP has said it that they will ensure that if voted for, the good people of Edo State will no longer go through these pains. We know how you feel, come out on Saturday with your voter card and cast your vote for the PDP,” he said.

The former majority leader in the House of Representatives, Honour-able Tunde Akogun, said the PDP would ensure quality education, quality health care, security, agriculture, women and youths empowerment, among other programmes that would boost the economy of the state.

He assured voters of adequate security, adding that the PDP was prepared to win and “we all need you in the winning team.”

Our reward for the eight years of gross incompetence in Edo state of PDP rule

A political party of PDP`s description in a setting as Edo state ought to have a track record of achievement after eight years of continous rule in education,infrastructural development,health care improvement,social cohesion,increased level of honesty,to mention but a few, to show as achievements.After all at the same time the governor was PDP, the BOT chairman,later minister of works,whose wife was also a woman leader of the same party all hailed from Edo state,there is nothing to show for these "Performers". I therefore think that this last ditch effort by PDP of turning Edo state to a garrision is counter intuitive.
