THE Nigeria Police Council, on Thursday, confirmed Mr Mohammed D. Abubakar as the substantive Inspector General of Police (IGP), with the police boss vowing to go even tougher on crime and criminality in the country.

Abubakar had been on acting capacity since he replaced Mr Hafiz Ringim as the police boss in January.

Fielding questions from State House correspondents after his confirmation, Abubakar said he would fight corruption, not only within the police service, but in the country as a whole.

Responding to a question on the current insurgency by the Boko Haram, he recalled that before he took over the office, police stations were being attacked indiscriminately by the sect, adding that hings had since turned around through efforts of the police.

Abubakar, who thanked the Police Council for believing in him, reassured Nigerians that he would do all that was possible to ensure better management of security situation in the country, adding that he would also focus on justice and fair play while leading by example.

On the issue of corruption, he said since the police took over the petrol subsidy case initiated by the House of Representatives, progress had been made on the investigation as witnesses had continued to give evidence.

He explained the massive deployment of police in Edo State for tomorrow’s election, adding that large presence of security was necessary to enable the people to vote in a free, fair and credible process.

According to him, “on the Edo election, because we believe that it must be free, fair and credible and we must provide safety and security for voters, I was there personally, physically to be able to reassure members of the public that we shall do that.”

He assured members of police force of his determination to improve their welfare and make them an effective force as he observed that a police force was the symbol of the government of a nation.

For many years, you guys in the uniform of Nigerian Police establishment have been a disgrace to the nation. I would not hold my tongue to argue that your abhrent degree of corruption in your ranks have been the apparent reason for the huge unemployment in Nigeria. Considering that it festered bribery, extortion and allowed crime to thrive. It took away,what was little of the enabling enviroment that allowed foreign investments to prosper and thereby contribute to lack of growth through employment of the youth. We hope the hoopla surounding your appointment and confirmation as Inspector General of Police would improve the stinking image of Nigerin Police.In your service please spare moments to think about the years of Alhaji Kam Salem and Chief Edet,both of whom served in that capacity.We do hope ineptitude in your ranks would be a bye gone while honor and intergrity become your legacy. We are watching.

I appeal to IG to experdite actions in uplifting effective welfare programmes for his men. He should fashion out modalities for the security and safety of police personnel, for example all police personnel and their family should have access to free medical treatment because it's only a healthy and secured policeman that can provide security for the nation. A sick and weak police officer can not stand the pressure and hazards in the job. Congraulations the IG.
